Set in Mexico, this is an American-made film but one which resembles - in some of its content and most of its style - the so-called 'spaghetti' Westerns which were being turned out in Italy at the time, achieving much popularity over here.
Perhaps the similarity is heightened by the fact that Clint Eastwood's image here has hardly changed from his 'Dollars' films and that the music was composed by that specialist in Italian westerns, Ennio Morricone.
Despite its quite lengthy running time, the film is a lively one with considerable bursts of action.
It's a story about a drifter (Eastwood) who saves a nun (Shirley MacLaine) from rape and then embarks on a series of madcap adventures.
With more than one surprise up its sleeve, it showcases the truly magnetic performances by Eastwood and MacLaine.
Although they're the only names of note in the cast, they carry the show with ease.
