Acted with great care, this romantic drama reveals that the same pacing and tactics director Lawrence Kasdan employed to such effect on Body Heat don't necessarily work when used with such little variation on a different kind of film. William Hurt plays the central character, a travel writer and walking iceberg who has become dehumanised since the death of his only son a year earlier. No wonder wife Kathleen Turner wants to leave this member of an extremely eccentric family who play weird card games and never answer the phone. For some reason, dog trainer Geena Davis is attracted to Hurt, setting up the triangular motif that dominates the film. Davis's performance, though, is a knockout and won her an Oscar.
