Burt Kennedy became an erratic director of spoof Westerns after the highpoint of Support Your Local Sheriff! , but this is one of his better efforts, only lacking a little ambition in its script. Robert Mitchum and George Kennedy score nicely off each other as the bad guys combining to tackle an even worse guy (David Carradine, sneering stonily in the days before 'Kung Fu'). An excellent supporting cast includes such doughty Hollywood character actors as Martin Balsam, John Davis Chandler, Kathleen Freeman and John Carradine. The few really sharp lines are hungrily devoured by the quality cast.
