A whodunit of epic proportions, set in Nazi occupied Paris during World War Two. Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif are the big star guns, but Tom Courtenay contributes the most controlled performance in a formidable cast that also includes Donald Pleasence, Christopher Plummer, John Gregson and Joanna Pettet. Unfortunately, the pace is often as weighty as the cast and the film comes nowhere near living up to the impact of its best moments: for all director Anatole Litvak's carefully calculated efforts, it's never quite believable.
