This quirky comedy stars Judy Davis as a dedicated Australian communist who has a one-night stand with Russian dictator Joseph Stalin. Nine months later little Joe is born. But she also cavorted with spy Sam Neill on the same night, so is Joe Stalin junior? When young Joe grows up to be a political agitator, it would seem so... There is an enjoyably batty side to this film although debut writer/director Peter Duncan rather takes the edge off things by mixing style and generally trying too hard. Neill is good , as is Richard Roxburgh as Joe. Mind you F Murray Abraham is an odd choice to play Stalin. Mind you it's worth watching just to see Stalin, Beria, Krushchev and Malenkov do a song-and-dance number to I Get a Kick Out of You!
