One wonders why anyone would try to better that delightful bitter-sweet romantic comedy from 1977, with Marsha Mason and Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss as the odd couple forced to share an apartment together. And this bland remake, from director Richard Benjamin, will be acceptable only to those who have never seen the original. The main problem is in the casting - Patricia Heaton (from Everybody Loves Raymond) as the ex-dancer/single mum and Jeff Daniels as the enthusiastic actor who storms into her and her daughter's life grate throughout, and there's little chemistry between them. They even manage to make the sparkle of Neil Simon's witty lines disappear. The story is enduring, but this version's strictly for the undemanding.
