The writer and director made his feature debut with the impressive drama The Mighty Celt.
He orginally attracted attention when he won the BBC Young Playwright of the Year Award in 1996 for The Seduction & Demise of Joseph Loughran.
Concentrating on radio work, he penned plays including Some Kind of Women, The Journey and The Calling for the BBC.
"There is no earthly use in making films that will only play well amongst ourselves. Movies have to have an international life to succeed."
In 1999, he wrote the Irish TV drama A Rap At The Door and the television series Pulling Moves.
The comedy Mad About The Dog, written by Elliott and directed by Paddy Breathnach, achieved some success.
In 2005, he wrote and directed The Mighty Celt, starring Robert Carlyle as a former IRA man turning his back on violence.
