The role of cowardly gambler Bret Maverick has long been dear to the heart of James Garner. It gave him his first big break as a TV series star in 1957, with the Emmy Award winning comedy series running until 1962 (with Roger Moore as Garner's British cousin), and he even named his production company Maverick as an affectionate nod to the moneyspinning character. This TV movie was a pilot film designed to resurrect the TV series but the idea never made it off the drawing board. Garner did, though, eventually get to co-star with Mel Gibson in the big-screen Maverick, and is said to be set to make a sequel. Gamble on!
