Greed, passion and racial tension are richly mixed in this Deep South drama which is lifted by a strong cast headed by Bette Davis, Jamie Lee Curtis and Scott Glenn. Glenn is a lawyer who helps a black woman defend her property from the town's wealthiest family, aided by two maverick members of the clan - Davis and Curtis. Under Jean-Claude Tramont's direction the pace is a little slow, and the story covers some well-worn issues, but fine performances all round make up for that.
