For a mainline megastar movie, this is uncomfortably unconvincing. Ruthlessly formula, predictable and empty-headed, it raises very little chemistry between Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn, whose hearts don't quite seem to be in it, and completely wastes David Carradine as the villain, not giving him a single decent scene. Nothing somehow seems real, and we never quite figure out why Mel is on the run after spending 15 years as a relocated witness (equally difficult to work out the reason for this in the first place). The final shootout in a zoo begins very promisingly, but goes on too long. One of those action-comedy-romances that sometimes work a treat, this one suffers under the uncharacteristically jerky direction of John Badham and from characters who aren't given dialogue that will supply the vital dimensions of life.
