A surprisingly successful follow-up to Support Your Local Sheriff! , in which James Garner's rogue gambler jumps train at a small gold-mining town of Purgatory and is immediately taken to be the feared gunman Swifty Morgan. Garner's determined to take the town for everything he can get, but naturally the real Swifty turns up towards the end and there's a fast and furious finale. Excellent support from Suzanne Pleshette, as a feisty dame whose aggression belies her intentions of running a ladies' finishing school, from a whole Main Street full of colourful Hollywood characters, and best of all from scowling Jack Elam as the town drunk who becomes Garner's sidekick. His on-train monologue at the end just grabs the film its third star.
