If you had to cast one actor as a hyper-tense, high-flying salesman with a quick temper and a vulnerability to cocaine, it would have to be James Woods. And Woods it is, in this cautionary tale about the effects of demon drugs. Its melodramatic, over-the-top approach explains why it lay on the shelf for two years before a cinema release. Woods gives his usual 100 per cent and Sean Young has some appealing vulnerable moments as his wife, but they never come across as real people in this sad and harrowing but rarely affecting story. Woods is such an unsympathetic character to begin with, and gives such an unvarying performance, that sympathy is hard to muster and he and Young lack that vital spark of warmth that would make their plight easier to reach out to.
