This story of American small-town life in the early Fifties features James Garner as a railwayman whose working life is threatened because diesels are replacing the steam locomotives he knows. He supplements his income by working as the town's nightwatchman, but even so he remains a man whose middle-life is beset by crises. Notable in a big cast are Joan Hackett as his wife and Anjanette Comer as an attractive neighbour with whom he strikes up a relationship. The setting is Oklahoma, though in fact the film's location work was accomplished in towns in Texas. Humour and flavour seeps from every pore of this movie, in much the same way as in Garner's later Murphy's Romance, which won him an Oscar nomination.
