Those superb Hollywood troopers Joanne Woodward and James Garner join forces as man and wife for this gently paced piece. They play long-marrieds Maggie and Ira Moran who, while on the road from Baltimore to Pennsylvania to attend a family funeral, begin to review their 28 years together. Woodward is in her element as the bossy but well-meaning and caring wife to Garner's world-weary husband. The quality of their acting is the joy of this film which does supreme credit to Anne Tyler's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
