Hooray for an inspiring sports film that's a front runner in any race for a gold medal. Billy Crudup stars as Seventies runner Steve Prefontaine, who held all seven US records between 2,000 and 10,000 metres, made a bid for glory at the Munich Olympics, and was tipped to win at the Montreal Games in 1976. But tragedy lurked just round the corner... Donald Sutherland runs away with the acting honours as his legendary coach Bill Bowerman (who invented the Nike shoe), but Crudup isn't far behind, convincingly re-creating the race sequences and kicking up a storm in the emotional scenes. A winner all the way, it deserves a lap of honour.
