A sentimental homecoming for several MGM contract players of the Forties (June Allyson, Peter Lawford and Ann Rutherford among them) in this diverting thriller about a beautiful divorcee thought to have been killed by her dog. James Garner is ideally cast as the humorous, small-town police chief whose character is somewhere between his own Jim Rockford and that of Rod Steiger in In The Heat of the Night. The brittleness of relationships within a small-town atmosphere is nicely established by director James Goldstone with the help of Lane Slater's thoughtfully written screenplay, and there are expert performances from Allyson and Edmond O'Brien.
