James Garner's personal charm shores up this glossy but superficial Hollywood version of the best-selling novel by Cameron Hawley. He plays a business whiz-kid who buys up ailing companies and uses them as tax relief for healthier firms. Of course, love enters the equation, in the form of Natalie Wood. Indeed, the mix of the two elements doesn't work too well and the film doesn't seem to know which way to jump. It should have been a comedy, but as it is it's a rather disappointing light drama for fans of Garner, who does the best he can with what he's given.
