A wonderfully funny, likeable spoof Western, with James Garner guying his TV Maverick image as the tall, dark stranger who prefers brains to brawn, and cleans up a lawless town his way. The script has more than its fair share of amusing lines and rich characters: notably accident-prone heroine Joan Hackett, drunken deputy sheriff Jack Elam and comic villain Walter Brennan.
