Nicolas Roeg's offbeat drama starring Gene Hackman as a gold prospector who strikes it rich and then finds no point to life. With Theresa Russell, Rutger Hauer and Jane Lapotaire.

A sort of 'Citizen Kane' on ice. Gene Hackman is (in flashback) a man who makes a fortune in Yukon gold, keeps a strange stone with a shape on it, and is finally beset by gangsters in the Caribbean. Sounds hard to follow? You've got it. But Nicolas Roeg's puzzle piece is also beautifully scored, skilfully shot and made deliberately in fragments, like the facets of a diamond showing a previous hidden face with a change of light.
