Alan Rudolph
Born: December 18 1943
Where: Los Angeles, California, USA
A director firmly of the maverick variety, Rudolph has scored successes with Afterglow, Remember My Name and Welcome to LA.
His first feature - 1972's Premonition - failed to impress and he found work as an assistant to Robert Altman.
Two years later he made the horror yarn Nightmare Circus before achieving some success with Welcome To LA starring Keith Carradine.
Subsequent outings included the thriller Remember My Name and the comedy-musical Roadie, notable for hits casting of rock star Meatloaf.
Switching to sci-fi he made Endangered Species in 1982 and went on to score a success with The Moderns, starring Carradine and Linda Fiorentino.
The 1991 murder-thriller Mortal Thoughts starred Demi Moore and Bruce Willis and Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle feature Jennifer Jason Leigh as waspish New York wit Dorothy Parker.
Nick Nolte and Julie Christie starred in the well-received romantic comedy Afterglow and Emily Watson played the lead role in 2000's Trixie.
As a screenwriter, Rudolph has worked on offerings ranging from Altman's Buffalo Bill and the Indians to Alice Cooper: Welcome to my Nightmare.
In 2002, he focussed on the dark side of marriage in The Secret Lives of Dentists.
