A vivid and stylish account of the days of the title, this TV Western with big-screen stars conveys American folklore in a manner that makes the incidents depicted seem fresh: even if they're filtered through the distortions of time, there's no glorification of the two famous outlaws here, as written by William Stratton and portrayed by Johnny Cash (who makes Frank the sobersides he probably was) and Kris Kristofferson, who offers one of his more spirited performances as the trigger-happy Jesse. Strikingly shot on location in Tennessee, this brings a new slant to an old story.
