A private eye spoof with Chris Lemmon (exhibiting many of father Jack's mannerisms) as the self-appointed sleuth whose detective agency is going nowhere fast until that inevitable beautiful woman (played by Jean Simmons) turns up on the other side of his desk. Not as funny as it thinks is, the film still offers Lea Thompson a chance to portray a teenager who's not all sweetness and light, and gives us a climax in a fairground that's a homage to several classic thriller films at the same time.
