Based ingeniously on Edgar Allan Poe's poem City in the Sea, this imaginative fantasy adventure concerns the lost undersea city of Lyonesse off the coast of Cornwall. Starring Vincent Price, as the undying deep-sea ruler, the film deals with the last hours of the doomed city, as a menacing volcano gets to boiling point. The disintegration of Price's kingdom is thrilling stuff and you couldn't ask for more: vast underwater caverns of great imagination, good special effects and fine camerawork put the topping on a first-class yarn. Bizarrely, Dad's Army star John Le Mesurier replaced ailing horror icon Boris Karloff as the Rev Jonathan Ives.
