Roly-poly Canadian comedy actor John Candy often seemed too big for the material Hollywood gave him. His earlier films, notably The Great Outdoors and Who's Harry Crumb? , were usually little more than a series of chases and misunderstandings as his character blundered from one disaster to another, usually in a variety of outlandish male and female disguises. It took such later vehicles as Uncle Buck and Only the Lonely to reveal more of the human being behind the big blowhard Candy often played. It's the earlier formula that is much in evidence same here, with Candy as a sacked cop confronting the Mafia almost single-handedly, and Meg Ryan as a lady running the cowboy security outfit Candy joins. The most outrageous scene has him trussed up in a blue tuxedo with a ruffled shirt that makes his enormous bulk look like a wrapped Christmas present. The hit-and-miss script is by Harold Ramis, star and co-writer of Ghost Busters, and James Keach, brother of Mike Hammer series star Stacy.
