The actress is probably best known for her Oscar-winning performance in former husband Woody Allen's Annie Hall.
She was also nominated for a best actress Academy Award for Reds, Marvin's Room and Something's Gotta Give.
Born Diane Hall, she changed her last name to her mother's maiden name because her name already existed in the actors' guild.
She studied Drama at Santa Ana College before dropping out to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
In 1970, Woody Allen cast Keaton in his Broadway play Play It Again, Sam, it was during this time that she became involved with Allen romantically and professionally.
In 1972 Coppola cast her as Kay in the Oscar winning movie The Godfather, and she reprised her role in the sequel The Godfather: Part II.
Some years later, Diane broke away from her comedy image to appear in the chilling Looking for Mr.
It was also in this year that she appeared in the Woody Allen movie Annie Hall, receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress.
When Diane and Allen broke up, she became involved with Warren Beatty and appeared in his film Reds.
Throughout the 80's she appeared infrequently in films and instead, started directing several music videos, as well as the documentary Heaven.
In 1990, she starred in the Godfather III and also won accolades for her performance as Nina Banks in The Father of the Bride.
After co-starring with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn in the 1996 comedy smash The First Wives Club, she earned another Oscar nomination for her work in Marvin's Room.
Subsequent work included the forgettable romantic drama The Only Thrill, the romance The Other Sister and her Oscar-nominated role in Something's Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson.
