A young and energetic cast attempts to recreate the box-office gold of the 1978 John Travolta Fifties musical Grease, but choreographer and director Patricia Birch merely slips up on a slick of her own making.

Where the original film had the high-school hero posing as an athlete to win a new girl's affections, here it is a new (English) boy at school (Maxwell Caulfield) posing as a black-clad biker to win over the heroine.

Michelle Pfeiffer, soon to become a major star, must cringe in her stilettos when she looks back on this early embarrassment.

Fans of Fifties movies should enjoy spotting blasts from the past Tab Hunter, Connie Stevens and Eve Arden.

But the music's unmemorable, the choreography undistinguished. Bad idea all round.
