German director Werner Herzog, whose speciality over the years has been making films in far-off places that contain adventure, lush settings and uncompromising action (including Aguirre, Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo and Cobre Verde), turns to the documentary with this study of the cannibalistic 'emperor' of the Central African Republic in times all too recent for comfort. Not for the faint-hearted, this is a grimly fascinating document that revolves round the investigation of English journalist Michael Goldsmith, who was fortunate to escape with his life.
