Big John Goodman is a second-rate Las Vegas lounge singer distantly related to the British Royal family. When a (hilarious) disaster at a photocall wipes out all those above him, Britain finds itself with a decidedly different new king. A nice comic idea that works well in patches. Unfortunately, those patches are a little too widely spaced for the film's own good. Goodman is engaging as the gauche Yank who creates his own Berk's Peerage, while Peter O'Toole does his 'actor laddie' bit as the new king's imperious private secretary and John Hurt enjoys himself as the sneaky Lord Graves: watch the scene where he visits the heroine's flat - the inside pages of his newspaper are blank! No, this may not be a terribly good film - but it's fun in spurts and jolly king Goodman makes the most of his starring role.
