Originally made for the BBC's Screen Two slot, this film and 'Truly, Madly Deeply' were deemed good enough to warrant a cinema release. Of the two efforts, this is definitely the weaker article. Imported American leads John Malkovich and Andie MacDowell are rather miscast and find the lightweight romantic comedy material beyond their grasp. The plot revolves around a missing Henry Moore miniature, which Malkovich and MacDowell planned to use to make a false insurance claim to pay their extravagant London hotel bill and prop up his ailing business. A sub-plot about a deaf-mute chamber maid and her punk brother sits uneasily with the rest of the proceedings. 'The Object of Beauty' is a throwback to the escapist British cinema of the 60s, but fails to recreate its frenetic energy.
