The James Gang rides again in this retelling of the crimes and times of one of the Old West's most famous outlaw bands. Robert Duvall plays a steely-eyed Jesse James, while Cliff Robertson is Cole Younger from whose viewpoint the tale is largely told. When an amnesty is offered to the gang, Younger wants to accept, but James doesn't trust the offer. He's right, of course, and, to take their revenge on the railroad company, they plan to raid the 'biggest bank west of the Mississippi' in Northfield. But it all goes disastrously wrong. Strong performances from all concerned and an air of gritty realism make this a highly watchable Western. A few years later, the tale was told in a more traditional but equally exciting way in The Long Riders.
