An overrated, squirmingly unfunny Western comedy with James 'Maverick' Garner shamelessly over the top as a con-man travelling the American south 'selling' his black partner (Lou Gossett) as a slave. The latter subsequently escapes and the men share the spoils. Gossett supplies what few smiles are going, while Andrew Duggan at least tries to play it straight as a cruel plantation owner. Subtlety is not in the script's vocabulary, however, allowing us to have little feeling for any of the characters, as the plot limps laughlessly along. The underlying message about the evils of slavery and human greed is, of course, serious, and enhances the film - a little.
