Written by WD Richter, creator of some thoroughly off-beat entertainments down the years, this crime comedy-thriller proves conclusively that an ingeniously constructed story, with carefully made individual scenes and twist after twist, can be as strong a winner as it ever was - and perhaps still the most entertaining genre of all. The plot is like a Bogart film gone haywire. James Caan plays an ex-convict on the trail of an embezzled $300,000, with the help (and hindrance) of kooky Sally Kellerman, who holds up restaurants when she needs money. Soon Dick and his contact are being pursued by two sinister black Dormobiles half-way across California. Who is doing what to whom? It's all lovely jigsaw-puzzle stuff, with one masterly scene from director Howard Zieff, as Caan tries desperately to escape four would-be assassins in a bingo tent.
