Director Jonathan Demme has been feted in more recent times for Philadelphia and The Silence of the Lambs, but this early comedy equals anything he's ever done. Reminiscent of the films of Frank Capra with its multitude of characters and incident, and wonderfully emotive ending, it gives the underrated and versatile Paul Le Mat his best role to date as the small-town guy who tries to hold several threads of his life together while trying to cope with wildcat broadcasters threatening to wreck his emergency rescue service. Demme directs with a great feeling of affection for his characters, creating the kind of film which leaves you with a warm feeling at the end.
