It's influence is so big through the years that elements of it can be found in virtually every organized crime film. Almost every comedy featuring a gangster in the last few years has spoofed something in The Godfather.
And almost 30 years on, one of the best made and best loved TV series is the Sopranos, which features a 21st Century Don and even steals the typeface from the Godfather poster.
While Marlon Brando holds centre stage as the powerful Mafia don (and won his second Oscar) the story is actually about Vito's college educated son, Michael - a stunning performance by Al Pacino.
Without wanting to give away too much of the plot, while the family has long dealt in alcohol and gambling, Don Vito doesn't want to move with the times and get into drug dealing. But the other mafia families are keen to lead the way in the supply of narcotics. This is a dark and brooding film that deals with vicious people many of whom will die before the credits, but the violence is never gratuitous.
And while we're are on the subject, Brando made one of the biggest financial killings of his career with this role by cleverly opting for just $100,000 up front - plus a percentage of the profits. The film stormed the world, taking $150 million, netting Brando a cool $16 million.
The Godfather also took Academy Awards for screenplay and as best picture and by anyone's money has got to be one of the best movies of all time.
If you have never seen this movie I envy you. Simpy Take the 'phone off the hook, turn off your mobile and settle down to a cinematic treat. You will not spend a better night watching a movie this year.
