This surrogate mother story was one of the best weepies of the Seventies. The tale is simple and charming, its sentiment never overdone. Barbara Hershey gives a superb performance as Tish, a free-spirited girl who is paid $2500 by a childless couple to make love to the husband so that they can have a child. The arrangement puts a strain on all concerned before the ensuing nine months are out. Not only does Hershey (only 22 when the film was made) prove equal to several different kinds of acting demands, but her expressions during the delivery of the baby really tug the heartstrings. Collin Wilcox-Horne and Sam Groom give good value as the parents.
