A Western hybrid. The film seems rather schizophrenic, thanks to having two quite different directors. It spends half its time plodding along, courtesy of direction by Robert Totten - who was sacked when star Richard Widmark refused to continue working with him - and the rest firing madly on all cylinders in scenes shot by his replacement, Don Siegel. Widmark is a gunslinger-turned-sheriff, whose tough methods threaten investors in the town, so businessmen decide to band together to dump him. Lena Horne is wasted as Widmark's mistress, but her fans will enjoy her crooning Sweet Apple Wine.
