In 1934 the crime of Violette Nozière obsessed the whole of France. Claude Chabrol, while re-creating her story, confessed that he fell in love with her before understanding her. Nobody has been able to explain the fascination of this rather ordinary, working-class girl - but Isabelle Huppert conveys her extraordinary contradictions and charisma in a memorable performance.
