Noted US film-maker Joshua Logan directed and co-wrote this ramshackle follow-up to John Ford's famous film 'Mister Roberts', for which Logan had co-written the original Broadway show. Robert Walker takes over the title role, which had won Jack Lemmon an Academy Award, but he lacks the maniacal edginess that made Lemmon's Pulver so funny. The film, in fact, is more noteworthy for its supporting cast. Little-known then, many of them went on to stardom: Walter Matthau, Jerry Orbach, James Farentino, Larry Hagman, James Coco and Jack Nicholson among them. Millie Perkins, who shot to short-lived fame in her first film, 'The Diary of Anne Frank', is an appealing female lead, and Burl Ives brings an amusing irascibility to the Captain which almost fills the gap left by James Cagney's departure from the role.
