Although there are elements of Chekhov's play in this Italian film, it is still a different story, set in the northern town of Pavia. It involves the changes that occur in an Italian family when various members fall in love - including two of the sisters going for the same man. Greta Scacchi plays the bored, married middle sister, with Italy's Valeria Golino and France's Fanny Ardant being the two female siblings either side and Sergio Castellito the musician brother who marries a greedy unfaithful wife. A brilliantly acted, well-shot piece that examines daily life and its complex emotions.
