An indelible screen classic, brimming over with razor-sharp dialogue, first-rate direction and acting that still looks good today. Warners wanted another Casablanca from this tale of World War Two intrigue in exotic Martinique - and found the perfect foil to Humphrey Bogart in 18-year-old New York model Betty Bacall. Virtually unknown in Hollywood, she was spotted on the cover of Vogue magazine by the wife of the film's director, Howard Hawks. Her name was changed to Lauren, she was whisked off her feet in real life by her co-star and the rest, as they say, is movie history. TRIVIA: Bacall was so nervous during the early days of filming that she had to keep her trembling chin down almost to her chest and flick her eyes upwards to look at Bogey. In an instant 'The Look' was born and launched her smouldering beauty into a succession of hit films.
