With this film, German director Fritz Lang completed 20 memorable years in Hollywood after a distinguished early career in the German cinema that included such classics as Metropolis. The film is both a jaded look at the morals of big-city newspapermen and a slick, smooth crime yarn, which has a memorable subway chase climax, and suffers only from having too many characters, which throws meat to a hungry all-star cast but also lends the film a certain disjointedness in its storytelling. Good work from Dana Andrews, Sally Forrest, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price and John Barrymore Jr.
