It's 1951 and George and Doris meet and have a fling while at a Californian resort. But they're both married and want to stay that way. They therefore decide to meet at the same place next year and the story catches up with the changing couple every five years. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn are excellent and Robert Mulligan's direction effectively crosses the years and gives a cinematic gloss to the film's stage origins. Although the plot is somewhat contrived and the two central characters are in fact committing adultery, this doesn't affect the film's very strong feelgood factor and your sympathies stay with George and Doris through the years.
