Richly cast and flamboyantly written, this tongue-in-cheek noir thriller finds perfectly paired Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell exchanging wisecracks and sideways glances. Together with Vincent Price's wildly enjoyable support turn, the stars help to smooth the brutal moments in a story which has ex-con Mitchum adrift in Mexico, finding that the $50,000 gangster Raymond Burr has offered him carries strings that entail the hero's imminent demise.
