French director Jean-Jacques Beineix's witty and stylish film debut quickly became a cult favourite in Britain. Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez plays an American opera diva who hasn't ever cut a disc so a cassette recorded by a young fan (Frederic Andrei) is priceless. And so, too, is another cassette a dying girl drops into the fan's saddle-bag, exposing the boss of a vice racket. Aimed at a young, trendy audience of the early Eighties, this mixture of action thriller, fantasy and romance adds up to exuberantly done entertainment with flashes of brilliance.
