After his success as the murderous Kit Carruthers in 1973's Badlands, a young Martin Sheen (now unforgettable as President Bartlet in The West Wing) played another anti-hero in this thriller. He's Hatch, an escaped mental patient who abducts a teenage girl (Linda Blair) and whisks her away to a lonely mountain cabin. But kidnapper becomes teacher, friend and lover. The two stars give this odd tale full throttle and, if it seems improbable, they and the writer suspend your disbelief effectively.
