Although it has a few good moments and a touching ending, this is a largely pointless sequel to the Oscar-winning The Last Picture Show from the same director and with much the same cast, now 20 years older. Alas, these are characters who no longer have anywhere to go. Duane (Jeff Bridges) has seen his oil-wells run as dry as his marriage to Karla (Annie Potts). Lester (Randy Quaid) is the town barber, in financial trouble of his own. Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) retreats into the movie shows of the past and towards a gentle madness, his affair with Ruth (Cloris Leachman), now Duane's ageing secretary, almost forgotten. Lusty waitress Genevieve (Eileen Brennan) is now a cripple on the sidelines. Jacy (Cybill Shepherd), Duane's high school crush, returns to the town for its centenary celebration after the collapse of her marriage and death of her son. With all these elements of tragedy running through, it's surprising that Texasville tries so hard to be a comedy. The strain shows in over-acting by the players, Quaid especially, in scenes that stretch for humour. It's a long, slow and boring prowl across fields of past glory, only tattered remnants of which still flutter.
