A richly detailed spectacle which treats the clashes between the actors of Ramborde's Theatre in Paris and hotheads of the new Republic in similar fashion to Oh! What a Lovely War. This being a Ken McMullen film, the approach is inevitably less accessible that Richard Attenborough's, but full of felicities and visually very striking. It certainly delights the eyes, even if it doesn't often stir the emotions. Aux armchairs, citoyens!
