John Boorman returned from the States to make this bold, bizarre film about an expatriate European prince (Marcello Mastroianni) and his black Notting Hill neighbours. Audiences may wince at the director's excesses, but few British films of the period have so much visual flair, exuberance or sheer strength of will.
