Edward Asner is riveting in the central role of this biography tracing the last three years of controversial American politician Huey Long (nicknamed Kingfish) who was assassinated in 1935. A small-town lawyer, the ruthless Long became Governor (many said dictator) of Louisiana, then US Senator, and had designs on the White House. Writer/director Robert Collins has done an excellent job of capturing the essence of Long's notorious career, backed up by Ric Waite's fine, Emmy Award-winning photography, which recreates the depression era superbly. There is a finely judged performance by Nicholas Pryor as the reporter who is both disgusted and fascinated by Long, and strong support comes from Diane Kagan as Long's wife, Fred Cook as his devious brother and Gary Allen as his hapless assistant. A high quality TV movie and a must for those who are interested in American history.
