The idea behind The Super sounds like a good one - nasty slum landlord is forced to live in one of his own crummy tenements - and one day maybe someone will make an amusing film based on it. Meanwhile the film here is two-dimensional and predictable. Joe Pesci, as the scumbag landlord, is the only reason to watch (although Vincent Gardenia as his even worse father is quite fun). The part suits his abrasive style although he is somewhat let down by the script. Sometimes, though, the living situations of Pesci's tenants seem too grimly real to be funny. Supporting characters are very thinly sketched and director Rod Daniel lacks subtlety. Even riding on the success of Pesci's somewhat better My Cousin Vinny, this only managed a video release in this country. A disappointment.
